about dance styles
Indian classical dance forms have a very long history and a close link with
the religious and spiritual aspects of the Indian culture. They all have had
some links with the temples of India and the mythical stories of the
antiquity. Over the years they all have evolved into classical art forms to
express various emotions such as love, hatred, anger, sorrow and the like.
The expressions have been systemised and coded rigorously over centuries.
Almost all of the classical dance forms also have very close association
with classical or light classical music. The three most popular dance forms,
namely, Bharatnatyam, Kathak and Odissi, follow very strict disciplines and
take years of dedication and training to master them. Nritta (pure dance) and
abhinaya (expressional dance) are the two most common elements of these
dance forms. The Indian classical dance forms went through a serious decline
a few years ago but have now regained their former glory, even going through
further evolutions through research and discovery by ardent followers of
these disciplines.
