PANDIT BUDHADITYA MUKHERJEE

Upholding with great distinction the traditions of the Imdadkhani Gharana of Sitar, Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee's name has long become synonymous with the sitar. Considered as the leading sitarist of his generation, Budhadityaji has received his entire training in Sitar from his illustrious father, Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, the well known sitarist and a doyen of the Imdadkhani Gharana of sitar, who initiated his son into sitar from the age of 5. From then, responding to the finesse of his father's profound teachings, Budhaditya's music has blossomed into a unique lyrical magic that reflects the 'gayaki ang' on the sitar with its befitting clarity.

Achievements, Distinctions and Awards conferred:

Internationally, Budhaditya is the first:

“ . . . Uday Shankar, Ravishankar, Ali Akbar, Satyajit Ray are all world reknowned bengalis. But what after them? Will there be no Bengali star after them? Suddenly we have found this brilliant young sitarist Budhaditya Mukherjee to fulfil this vacuum . . .” ……………….Ananda Bazar Patrika, July 26 1976.

. . Listening to the alaap and jod in Rageshri with which the recital opened, one realized that here was not only a young boy who was as good as Ustad Vilayat Khan or Rais Khan technically, but a prematurely mature artist, whose musical imagination vies with that of the greatest in the country. . . .” …………………..Hindustan Standard, Calcutta Publication July 24 1976

Shri Bijoyaditya Mukherjee aged 22, is the son of world renowned sitarist Shri Budhaditya Mukherjee and the grandson of Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, a doyen of the Imdadkhani Gharana of Sitar. His grooming in sitar began at the tender age of five, by his illustrious grandfather and presently continues vigorously with his renowned father. At the age of 10, Bijoyaditya was awarded the prestigious National Scholarship by the Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India, for Sitarwadan. In February 1996 at the age of 11, he made his debut performance at Kalakunj, (Kalamandir), Calcutta, astounding his unbelieving audience. In May and June, 1997, Bijoyaditya performed extensively in the ‘Wereld Kinder Festival’ (World Children Festival), Holland, where he was the only child from India to perform six individual solo concerts. The Dutch National television network broadcasts his recitals countrywide repeatedly, even now. In January 1998 he became the youngest artist till date to perform for over an hour, in the Ramkrishna Institute of Culture’s day long music conference, amongst and being preceded by towering personalities like Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Jasaraj, and such others. His performance also as the youngest artist till date, at the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Sammelan, Varanasi, in April 1998 surprised the 2000 strong knowledgeable audience and was profusely appreciated by one and all, as well as the press. So much so that the festival hosted his sitar recitals repeatedly again - in the years 2000 as well as 2001.

In October 1998, at the age of 13, he was the youngest artist to perform at the ‘Uttaradhikar’ festival of the Ustad Allauddin Sangeet Academy at Bhopal, inaugurating the same as well.

On 10th January 1999, he performed as the concluding musician for the annual festival of the Shri Aurobindo Centre, Calcutta and on 28th April 1999, his performance, also as the concluding musician as well as also the youngest, for the Dover Lane ‘Nabin Pratibha Festival’ brought him serious appreciation from connoisseurs and media alike, from all over Calcutta.

On 24th November, 2000, he performed in ‘Jewels of Tommorow’ at G. D. Birla Sabhagar and on 18th December, 2000, his performance for Salt Lake Music Circle, at Uttam Manch, Calcutta drew the largest crowd in the festival. On 21st November 2001 Bijoyaditya performed in Delhi for the “Chattisgarh day”, on the occasion of the 1st anniversary of the state of Chattisgarh, where he was born.

On 21st December, 2002, Bijoyaditya performed in the National Level music competition held by the Acharya Vishwanath Devsarma Foundation of Long Island, New York, USA, at Mumbai, and was specially selected by them from their combined instrumental category to give compete in the finals under their auspices in New York, USA on the 31st October and 1st November 2003 amongst stalwarts like Pandit Jasaraj, Pandit Vikku Vinayakram and others. On 1st November 2003, Bijoyaditya stood 1st in this competetion held in Kong Island,New York, USA, while maintaining a huge margin from the runner up.

Reviewing his sitar recital in the Vishnu Digambar Jayanti in Delhi on the 8th August 2003, The New Age Op-Ed, Dhaka 11th August 2003 writes: “ . . . The very next day, there was this great discovery. Budhaditya Mukherjee, one of the truly gifted sitar players of the current generation sprang a lovely surprise on us — his 18 year old son, Bijoyaditya Mukherjee. The little master played Raaga Bihag, a lilting evening melody to a full house unending applauses at Delhi’s Kamani auditorium. He was electric, just like his father who made his debut on the same stage 25 years ago. In a manner of speaking the day was Bijoyaditya’s “bismillah”, a day of auspicious beginning. I would like to inform you that a new star is born to Indian music”. . . . On 21st May 2004, Bijoyaditya once again regaled audiences in Delhi at the ‘Legends of India’ Festival with his solo performance in the Kamani Auditorium. In Kolkata too, in August 2004, Bijoyaditya maintained his now well established and stabilized reputation in his recital for ‘Sangeet Piyasi’.

In Feb 2005, he effortlessly mantained his individual identity as a sitarist intact even during performing at the Kamani Hall in duet with his illustrious father while performing for ‘Aakriti’. Recently, Bijoyaditya gave a very successful recital in Dewas for the nationally reknowned Pandit Kumar Gandharva Sangit Sammellan on April 9, 2005. His musical prominence expressed itself in the 2 hr long Lalit duet he played with his reknowned father at Navi Mumbai on 9th July 2005. Later the same year he performed a well received solo in Ambala (Punjab). (www.budhaditya.com)
